Help your pet maintain their optimal weight with our weight management program.
It may make them look extra cute and cuddly, but extra weight on your pet can be detrimental to their health. It can lead to many health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Did you know that overweight or obese pets have become so common most owners do not realize their pets may need help? A recent study found that when veterinarians diagnosed a group of dogs as overweight, 39% of the owners thought their furry friends were in a good weight range. Here at Little Creek Veterinary Clinic, we can help you get your pet to a healthier weight with our team of experts. The solution is not always as simple as getting your pet to eat more or less food. Depending on your pet’s species and breed, certain factors need to be considered. During a weight management consultation, we can formulate a plan tailored to your pet’s unique situation as well as show you techniques and help you incorporate them into your life. Certain activities, behavioural modifications, prescription diets, and more can all be recommended for your pet.
It really depends on your pet’s age, species and breed. Some pets are naturally heavier while others are naturally thin. The best thing to do is consult with your veterinarian.
Although each pet is different, visually speaking, its chest should always be slightly wider than its abdomen. You should also be able to feel the bottom-last row of their ribs – it should not be covered with a layer of fat. If you see your pet panting or being winded more easily after light exercise, or if they are having trouble moving from a sitting down to a standing up position (and vice versa), this may be a sign of an overweight pet.
